After making a Manhattan a few weeks ago, I decided to try making another favourite cocktail, an Old Fashioned, the other night. Both recipes call for similar base ingredients: whisky and Angostura bitters. All I needed to add for an Old Fashioned was sugar and an orange. I didn’t want to buy a tub of maraschino cherries, so I skipped out on that—although I’m not sure how important it is in making a “true” Old Fashioned.
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon granulated white sugar
- 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 teaspoon water
- 2 ounces rye whisky
- 1 orange
Start by placing one sugar cube or the teaspoon of granulated white sugar into a glass. Add thef Angostura bitters and water, and muddle the ingredients together. Pour in 2 ounces (or one shot) of whisky (here I used good ol’ Crown Royal), and mix that in as well.
To finish it off, add your orange. Some recipes I read suggested a “zest” of orange, while others called for a full “slice” of orange. Since I don’t yet own a proper citrus zester, I sort of went with a bit of both by slicing a bit of orange zest and flesh with a sharp knife. If you had maraschino cherries, now would be the time to throw one in. There you have it: an easy but ever-so-classy Old Fashioned.
